What Makes a Sandwich?

Sandwich Requirements

  • There must be something in between the grain
  • The bread cannot fully cover the inside
  • There must be two SPLIT pieces of bread
  • If there is only piece of bread it is not a sandwich
  • If you remove the top piece or the food in the middle it is no longer a sandwich
  • It must be something grain or grain adjacent that holds the sandwich together
  • Gluten free bread substitutes are an exception
  • While sandwiches have a broad definition, sandwiches such as grilled cheese require specific ingredients
  • An open face sandwich and a normal sandwich are very different
  • Accidently tearing bread in half while eating something turns it into a sandwich

Debatable Sandwiches

People often argue that these examples are and aren't sandwiches.

Hotdog

Hot Dogs are the most popular and common argument on if it's a sandwich or not. It's very clearly NOT A SANDWICH. The wiener is the hotdog not the full deal. When it's in the bun the bread is still connected as well. "whAt iF I bReaK tHE bUn, iSn'T It a HoTdoG NoW?" Yeah it is, but that's because you're bad at eating hotdogs.

Sausage Roll

Sausage Rolls are great food but they aren't a sandwich. Sausage rolls are completely covered by the pastry and while it's close to a sandwich. It would be like calling a corn dog or pretzel dog a sandwich. It's not even bread it's a pastry.

Dumpling

Dumplings are a small ball of dough that are bold, fried, or baked into a casserole. One could argue that it's a sandwich but the dough fully covers the food making it not qualify.

Wraps

Wraps could contain most of the things on this list such as the sausage roll. The bread isn't fully separated from the other disqualifying it. While not sandwiches they are very similar and they work in the same way. Sandwiches and wraps are different foods but are interchangeable.

Sushi

Sushi is an odd one. While I would say it isn't a sandwich normally as the rice while technically being grain, fully wraps around the fish. However, types of sushi can sometimes have only two bits of rice on top making it a sandwich.
